Now, to my belated report on my latest money-management efforts: when is it worth investing more in something that might (emphasis on might) last longer?
Sam has a major issue with tennis shoe wear and tear. He is hard on those
shoes. Something about the way he plays outside causes shoes to spontaneously disassemble within a few weeks.
I decided to take Sam to REI and get the sturdiest shoes we could find. I prepped him: there will be no cartoon characters on these shoes. They will not light up. They will be plain and sturdy. If you can destroy these, then your next pair will be steel-toed boots.
Coupon and dividend in hand, we paraded to the shoe section and found these Keens. The sole is on solid piece that wraps all the way over the toe and it is some serious rubber. I think these were designed with rock climbing in mind. Sam was skeptical at first but agreed as soon as he figured out how to run with the heavier sole.
That was 5 days ago. I've been feeling pretty smug about this until the shoelace broke today. Anyone have a recommendation for indestructible shoelaces?

Susan,
Don't forget you can always return a product that doesn't meet your standards at REI with no questions asked. I have had laces brake and Rei will replace them or in my case they let me get a new pair of running shoes. Plus, I have keen shoes for work and I love them. Great choice. No ideas on shoe laces. Steel?

Thanks Michelle! I went to REI today and got some great help. The shoe guy replaced the shoelace for me and showed me how to do it myself. Suggested nylon rope instead of elastic bands if this happens again.
He also told me the scratch & dent sale is a great place to stock up on shoes because people often return them with broken shoelaces. Replace the shoelace, good-as-new inexpensive shoe!
nope, but we have a son who destroys shoes, too...the ONLY ones that work for us are LLBEAN. If they fall apart and they still fit, they replace them completely...no kidding, with the last pair, the lace broke four months into the shoes (or more?) and they gave us brand new sneakers. AWESOME!
You're kidding! That is perfect. I'll be checking llbean's shoe inventory soon. Nice.
