Budding Comedian

My parents are coming to visit this weekend and Samuel is very excited. For the purpose of appreciating the conversation that follows, it is helpful to know that my dad is a big guy, known more for brute strength than agility. He is about 6'3" and was the state champion power lifter for his age group a few years ago.

So, Samuel was jumping around and crowing about Nana and Pop-Pop's visit, so I asked what he thinks they might like to do while there are here.
"Nana and Pop-Pop play cars."
I'm sure they would like to play cars. Do you think maybe they would also like to go to the park?
"Pop-Pop go down slide and I catch him."
(Pause.)
"That be funny."

That would indeed be funny.

Action Pictures

Yesterday (Father's Day) my dad requested that I post more "action pictures" on this blog. How can I refuse my very own dad, our favorite Pop-Pop and an avid supporter of thisgirl?

In the video below, Jude is standing on a stepstool. And then he isn't.

Stats

This morning all five of us appeared at the pediatrician's office to get check-ups for the boys. It was a little wild, but everyone was in a good mood and very cooperative. Samuel seemed kind of pleased to be there with his brothers rather than solo.

I always enjoy getting their stats, so I thought I'd share them, listed here from the smallest to the biggest:

Owen: 8 lbs. 12 oz. (he's gained three pounds in a month!) & 20 in. long

Jude: 23 lbs. & 32 in. tall

Samuel: 33 lbs. & 37 in. tall

There is no scientific measurement for handsome and sweet, but these guys would all break the scale.

What Could Be Better Than That?

This week is one BIG reason I adore living here: we have had seven straight days of sunny weather, with daytime temperatures in the upper 70s and nighttime temps in the low 60s. This morning a friend stopped by unexpectedly with a cup of well-flavored coffee for me, and she found me sitting on the deck in my back yard with Jude chatting from his high chair and Owen having a bottle. It was a very happy surprise.

This afternoon Samuel and Jude played in the sprinklers with four neighbor kids. It was quite a sight: a sprinkler toy in each yard for three consecutive houses, and six happy kids.

What a life.

Where's My Jamie?

On Saturday we had a very special birthday party for Samuel and Jude with all our boys' birthfamilies. Here they are each with their birthmoms. It was so much fun!

Samuel is starting to understand that he, Jude, and Owen each have a birthmom. We rehearsed several times which birthparents belong to which brother, and that Jamie is his birthmom. So, when he heard Ben say that Jamie was here, he came around the house looking for her and asking, "Where's my Jamie?"

It will be fun to watch them all grow into understanding "my Chelsea and Julius" and "my Kati".

Our Three Sons

It is a harrowing task to get a snap of these three together; Owen sustained a friendly smack in the face from Jude in one shot, but he bravely snoozed right through it. They all seem so pleased and proud to be brothers.

More Than the Music Has Changed

Tonight Owen and I went to see his birthmom Kati’s last chorus performance of her high school career. I go to the school chorus concerts on occasion because I enjoy them and know several of the students, but this evening was a little different.

The performance was fun—all 80’s music, involving the students’ interpretation of 80’s fashion. Since I was a teenager in the 80’s, I was both amused and felt a little like I was being teased all night. I don’t think we looked quite THAT silly.

Owen slept through all the music, but after the program Kati zoomed right over to cuddle him and show him off. It was such fun to see. All of her friends came over to admire Owen, and I noticed one girl take a picture with her cell phone. I stood to the side with Kati’s mom and watched. Kati’s family and I chatted for a few minutes, Owen snoozed. After a while we packed Owen up in his carseat, Kati left to meet friends for a post-performance celebration, and I came home to sit quietly in a dimly-lit living room and take care of baby Owen.

That’s what an open adoption is like. Kati gets to be Owen’s birthmom and a teenager, I get to be a mama, and Owen gets oodles of people who adore him.
